Three-time Emmy winning director Todd Holland shocked participants and listeners at a recent Outfest panel debate when he said that he advises young, gay male actors to "stay in the closet."
Holland, who was talking as one of the featured panelists, and who once worked as a director on the critically acclaimed HBO sit-com The Larry Sanders Show, explained that it's a necessary career choice if a gay actor wants to succeed in Hollywood, LA Weekly reports.
Fellow panelist and filmmaker Kirby Dick, director of Outrage, a 2009 documentary about gay politicians who stay in the closet to further their political careers, told Holland: "I know where you're coming from, but it's a regressive argument."
Holland, who was legally married before Proposition 8 was passed by California voters in November, responded that he was just being realistic, but Dick believed that if "an A-list actor came out, it would have more impact on the culture than an A-list politician."
That's stupid... No-one should be outed; that's a completelly personal matter and each has to decide how and when. As Robert Gant said "I think outing people is fear based, the fear that if we don't out them, it will make things harder for all of us." and "A friend of mine says, 'In God's world there are no mistakes, only lessons.' So I'm coming out exactly when I'm supposed to." Each at their own pace at their own time...
I have always fought for being able to come out if I , If I ,want to. These reporters who out at the drop of a hair pin should be taken down a knotch or two. Gays who believe that everyone should tell who they are , are themselves to worst outer's. Theses are the lipspiting , blowing bubles nits , who think it furthers the gay cause. Wrong , its personal and I have told those who ask ,its none of your fuc*ing business. When we can look into ourselves and respect who we are and take life as it is , that is the reward we can have , all things in good time. Don't give in...
