| Not Only Amazon: Google Fails Gays Too |
Amazon.com has been under a lot of pressure lately after it was revealed that the online bookstore apparently had removed many gay titles from their inventory. A huge campaign called Amazon.fail was launched on Twitter against Amazon's policy and the company was forced to come with an explanation. The company claims there was a glitch in their system which classified sexual orientation as adult content. Amazon.com is not the only company with "internalized homophobia" in their system. Search giant Google also has algorithms in their system that equals the term "gay" with pornography. When we tried to add an ad to Google Adwords, Google's advertising network, containing the term "gay", we where given the error message saying: "Gay - Unacceptable Content." What's even worse is the accompanying text: "We've detected that your ad may contain words often associated with pornography. Google policy prohibits the advertisement of pornography unless it involves consenting adults. Related content is not permitted on the website or as ad text or keywords." We don't beleive Google to be homophobic but they need to do something about their filters. Defining the term "gay" to be pornographic and suggesting that it does not involve consenting adults is definitely offensive. Screenshot from Google Adwords:
