The Oscars was a big night for gay people not only due to actor Sean Penn and screenwriter Dustin Lance Black winning awards for the gay biopic Milk, but also for both men speaking up for gay rights in their acceptance speeches.
In his speech, Penn called the Academy, "you commie, homo-loving son of a guns," and said, "I think it's a good time for those who voted for the ban against gay marriage to reflect – to sit and reflect – and anticipate their great shame and the shame in their grandchildren's eyes if they continue that way in their support. We have to have equal rights for everyone."
Screenwriter Dustin Lance Black spoke directly to gay and lesbian kids, saying, "No matter what everyone tells you, God does love you … very soon, I promise you, you will have equal rights federally across this great nation of ours."
Saw this film, thought it was magnificent. Penn played the part disarmingly. EVERYONE should see this film to see how many of us older gays have had to fight for what few rights we have
