Rupert Everett: Coming Out Killed My Career

on 02-22-2009 15:41

Rupert Everett

British gay actor Rupert Everett tells the New York Times Magazine that he believes his decision to come out of the closet killed his career.

Everett says that coming out - combined with taking on the role as Julia Robert's gay best friend "My Best Friend's Wedding" - pigeonholed him into only playing gay characters.

"I wanted to be a movie star,"” he told the mag. "I had a difficult set of circumstances to deal with, particularly for a movie career."

When pressed, Everett responds bluntly, "Being gay, really. It just doesn't work."

Everett has modeled for a slew of designers including, Versace, Valentino and Yves St. Laurent, and was named one of People Magazine's 50 Most Beautiful People in 2000. He has also voiced characters in two of the "Shrek" films.

1. He made it to celebrity status--
--so what is the problem? The fact may be that there is not a niche for him right now. In the entertainment industry there is no guarantee that he was ever going to get more roles than the ones that he has been blessed with. He needs to get over it and not complain. He has gotten a lot farther than most people ever will.

2. about will's comment
will's comment really misses the point that Everett was making. Of course there was no guarantee that Everett would get more roles than the ones he did get, but his being an out queer put the kiss of death on the few roles that he might have landed if he had kept his sexuality to himself; his gayness further narrowed the field; and while Everett may have "gotten further" than will, he hasn't gotten as far as he could have.He has every right to complain about being ruled out because of how certain insiders perceive queers. And those queers who insist that every queer be out need to just STFU!

3. So Typical.
Yes this is so typical. Who is to really say that he could have gone further or not. Thats a stretch!
However Ticklish_Joe said it best in it narrowing the chances. A lot has changed and many are now tolerating homosexuals more but many don't. The whole coming out thing is surely not for everybody and it certainly have disastrous consequences for some. Personally I think Rupert has his regrets one shouldn't wear their gayness on their sleeve at work unless they are prepared to suck up the consequences. Rupert will be OK though.....

4. Sad...
I'm sorry this has been the case for Rupert. I always have feard it to be true, though, and that is why I never criticize our closeted colleagues. This pic of him, though is bad...I love the haircut...but his thin face gives him a late stage AIDS look....what a shame....
