California Bans Gay Marriage

No on Prop 8 lost in California

California voters passed the dreaded Proposition 8 Tuesday, the measure to once again ban gay marriage in California, throwing into doubt the unions of an estimated 18,000 same-sex couples who wed during the last 4 1/2 months.

LA Times writes:

In San Francisco on Tuesday night at the packed headquarters of the "No on 8" campaign party in the Westin St. Francis Hotel, supporters heard from San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, whose decision to issue same-sex wedding licenses in his city led to the court ruling that made gay marriage briefly legal in the state. .

"You decided to live your life out loud. You fell in love and you said, 'I do.' Tonight, we await a verdict," Newsom said, speaking to a roaring crowd before final returns were in.

Elsewhere in the country, two other gay-marriage bans, in Florida and Arizona, also won. In both states, laws already defined marriage as a heterosexual institution. But backers pushed to amend the state constitutions, saying that doing so would protect the institution from legal challenges.

Proposition 8 was the most expensive proposition on any ballot in the nation this year, with more than $74 million spent by both sides.

2. Victory in the speech!
So sad to see that the people of California feel animal's rights are more important then the rights of same sex couples who happen to be human beings by the way...they vote to liberate the animals confinement...isn't that ironic as they try to confine human beings - the gay community more. The victory is in our new President's acceptance speech where he used the word "gay" in the context of equality. This is a milestone in comparison to the Republican, religon based narrow minded choices in the states of California and Florida in regard to same sex unions. I at this time have no interest in emulating the heterosexual model of union - which for the most part is a failure - however; I mourn with my brothers and sisters as we have once again been suppressed by the limitations of fear and hatred and ignorance. I am affected by the decision as my choice to marry a man that I was in love with if I so decided has been taken away in this country. We are celebrated in the arts we bring so much to. We are sought after in reality shows for our incredible taste levels; our beautiful esthetic. We are awarded in sitcoms. Yet when we ask to be treated as equals in the way we love we are denied and shamed for even having the thought. We are treated as less then the animals in our confinement. When we as a community stop the self hatred and shame; when we no longer feel the need to hide our sexuality in closets and the darkness...then we too shall overcome the barriers that attempt to hold us down. And we will...we will continue to grow and push forward in this country...we always have...we are not going to go away...we have a model now of a man who was suppressed as well. A man who did NOT accept the limitations put on him because of the color of his skin. A man who is considered a minority has been elected - not appointed, but elected by the people as President of the United States. He stresses the word United...the gay community is represented and celebrated in that election...in that victory. Our new President made that abundantly clear when he acknowledged the community in his acceptance speech and for this we are in celebration! The best is yet to come. I hold the vision of a day when the archaic lines of sexuality are released in the way the archaic lines of race were last night.

3. Thank God 8 passed!
Marriage is defined as the state of being united to a person of the opposite sex as husband or wife in a consensual and contractual relationship recognized by law. This is the "tradition of marriage," gays do not fall under this catagory, if you are looking for equal rights please look elsewhere.

4. Sad, confusing.
I am a heterosexual male, but I'm still concerned about this issue. I have several friends who are gay, and I love and respect them as much as any other friend. I absolutely agree that a person deserves equal rights regardless of their sexuality. Sadly, the spiritual and legal definitions of marriage are being crossed here! Where is the separation of Church and State? Marriage stems from religion, and we all know church and govt. are not supposed to be controlling each other. Legal needs to be detached from spiritual for more open acceptance. Everyone deserves equality!
