Mormon Pro-Footballer Fights Prop 8

on 11-03-2008 12:50

Steve & Barbara Young

Football Hall of Famer Steve Young and his wife Barbara are Mormons but still support the fight against Proposition 8, the ballot measure that could ban gay marriage in California.

Barbara Young is active in the fight against the measure and even though her husband hasn't officially come out against Propostition 8, Mrs. Young says her husband supports her all the way:

We believe all families matter, and we do not believe in discrimination, therefore, our family will vote against Prop.8

I am very passionate about this issue and Steve is completely supportive of me and my work for equality. We both love our Church and are grateful that our Church encourages us to vote our conscience. Steve prefers not to get involved politically on any issue no matter what the cause and therefore makes no endorsement.

Barbara Young has donated $50,000 to No on Prop 8.

1. Article is misleading
Steve's wife Barbara is a No on 8 supporter. She is sympathetic to Gay causes because her only sibling is Gay.

Barbara is very vocal on issues she believes in, and Steve is silent on his political views. His silence should not have been construed as to his support for No on 8. He has not authorized his name to be used for No on 8.

As is often the case, couples come from different backgrounds and may not see things exactly the same. Steve Young is supportive of Barbara expressing her opinion.

2. as typical
both sides reach for any possible support...obama yes or obama no....steve young yes or steve young no
young's wife has a gay brother...of course she is giving he support to him.
steve supports his wife in having her own opinion, but he does not support gay marriage.
at least he supports his wife's right to make up her own mind. ...though he was very quick to "correct" her statement

3. Title of Article misleading
It doesn't sound at all like Steve Young is/was "Fighting Against" Proposition 8. I attended the same ward (congregation) as Steve back in the 1990s when he lived in Los Altos Hills and he was remarkably quiet. He's got his Jusis Doctrate, so don't assume he's not intellectually engaged, but I remember him being very very soft spoken and understated.
On a side note, I hope those that fought for Proposition 8 don't see their victory as an anti-gay mandate because it is not, or at least shouldn't be. Both far wings of this partisan debate need to temper themselves and draw back to the middle.
