NY Times / Google Backs CA Gay Marriage

Google & NY Times for gay marriage

Both New York Times and Google has come out against California's Proposition 8, the measure that could stop gay marriage after the November election.

New York Times writes:

California voters will have a chance in November to protect the rights of gay men and women, and to preserve the state’s Constitution. They should vote against Proposition 8, which seeks to amend that Constitution to prevent people of the same sex from marrying.

...

Whether this important civil rights victory endures is now up to California voters. Opponents of giving gay couples the protections, dignity and respect that come with marriage are working furiously to try to overturn the court ruling through Proposition 8. It is our fervent hope that Californians will reject this mean-spirited attempt to embed second-class treatment of one group of citizens in the State Constitution.

Google writes:

While there are many objections to this proposition — further government encroachment on personal lives, ambiguously written text — it is the chilling and discriminatory effect of the proposition on many of our employees that brings Google to publicly oppose Proposition 8.

...

We hope that California voters will vote no on Proposition 8 — we should not eliminate anyone's fundamental rights, whatever their sexuality, to marry the person they love.

1. Companies locate in gay marriage states
Companies (and individuals) that want Prop 8 to fail simply need to move their business from a state that does not support gay marriage. Economics will drive politics, as usual.
