| Brad Pitt Donates $100K to Marriage Equality |
Hollywood actor Brad Pitt announced Wednesday that he has made a $100,000 contribution to fight Proposition 8, the ballot measure that seeks to ban gay marriage in California. "Because no one has the right to deny another their life, even though they disagree with it, because everyone has the right to live the life they so desire if it doesn't harm another and because discrimination has no place in America, my vote will be for equality and against Proposition 8," the actor said in a statement. Pitt told Esquire magazine in 2006 that: "Angie [Jolie] and I will consider tying the knot when everyone else in the country who wants to be married is legally able." Pitt's donation is the largest so far by an A-list celebrity fighting the measure. Earlier today we reported that supporters of Proposition 8 have raised $16.2 million, while gay marriage defenders only have managed to raise $10.8 million. Political strategist Chad Griffin said he is hopeful that the move will prompt others to get involved. Democratic billionaire Ron Burkle has agreed to host a large fundraiser at his home in October to rally the entertainment industry against Prop. 8, which opponents say will take away important benefits such as health insurance and will complicate decision-making related to medical emergencies and other situations in domestic partnerships.
