Obama Calls for Debate on Gay Issues

In his acceptance speech for the Democratic nomination Thursday night, presidential candidate Barack Obama called for a principled debate over domestic issues that divide the parties, such as abortion, gun ownership, same-sex marriage, gay and lesbian rights and immigration.

"This, too, is part of America's promise — the promise of a democracy where we can find the strength and grace to bridge divides and unite in common effort," he said.

"I know there are differences on same-sex marriage, but surely we can agree that our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters deserve to visit the person they love in the hospital and to live lives free of discrimination," Obama said.

Wednesday, Obama's top-ranking openly LGBT staffer Steve Hildebrand reached out to the gay community to increase the number of LGBT Obama supporters from the current 68 percent: "I'm not satisfied with that. I think we have a lot of work to do within the campaign to make sure we get that number up to 70 or 80 percent of LGBT people. We need to make sure that people know Sen. Obama's record and his positions on issues that are important to the community," said Hildebrand.

I've never heard a presadential canidate say anything like this. If he's not bullshiting, this is an awsome thing.

I worry that Obama will say anything to be elected. How many times has he changed his position on things from drilling for oil to abortion? He's a politician just like all the rest!

3. Doesn't Say....
In the article it mentions that we deserve the right to visit the person they love in the hospital, we can do that, it doesn't give us the right to make decisions, nor does it state, anything about gay marriage, he still opposes that. Also to live without discrimination, the politicians are the ones guilty of the way the GLBT are treated. They want our vote, yet we will still be 2nd or bottom class citizens, they all promise the world, but as soon as they are elected, it goes to the way side.
