NBC's Olympics President, Gary Zenkel, issued an apology for the NBC reporting team's failure to talk about Mitcham's story and the fact that his partner was there to root him on. The reporting team routinely talked about the other athletes family and background.

"We regret that we missed the opportunity to tell Matthew Mitcham's story. We apologize for this unintentional omission," said Zenkel.
