Portland Elects Gay Mayor

on 05-21-2008 10:47

Sam Adams

Portland, Oregon, became the first major U.S. city to elect an openly gay man as mayor of the city Tuesday, when commissioner Sam Adams won an easy victory over businessman Sho Dozono.

"I'm running not to be a gay mayor, but a great mayor," Adams said after delivering his victory speech. "But I'm very cognizant, very aware that I'm the first openly gay mayor of a major American city. That's a real honor."

The Oregonian reports: "The city commissioner soundly defeated 12 other candidates Tuesday to assume the top office in the city and one of the tallest bully pulpits in the Pacific Northwest. He captured 58 percent of the vote to avoid a November runoff against travel agency owner Sho Dozono. Adams, 44, won by stressing specifics: He promised to work with school leaders to cut the dropout rate, make Portland a leader in environmentally friendly businesses and use the Portland Streetcar and better planning to spur urban renewal."

1. Another Reason Gays love Portland
As a gay man living in Portland, I have to say it's one of the most liberal and gay-friendly cities I've ever encountered. What I love is that Sam's sexuality was never even brought up as an issue in this race. It didn't matter to Portlanders.

2. Portlander
Congrats to us in Portland, but David Cicilline got there first, as mayor of Providence, R.I., elected in 2002.

And then Toni Atkins was appointed mayor of San Diego for a short time.

So Sam Adams is the third openly gay mayor of a major U.S. city. Yay!

Portland is now the largest city is the U.S. to have elected a gay mayor. Yay again!
