$15 Million Ejaculation

on 05-15-2008 20:25

My Lonesome CowboyA sculpture of an anime style cowboy ejaculating by Japanese artist Takashi Murakami sold for $15 million on Wednesday night at Sotheby's.

The winning bid for the controversial sculpture, "My Lonesome Cowboy," of which another cast is currently on view at the Brooklyn Museum of Art, was submitted to Sotheby's by telephone. The final selling price was nearly four times its $4 million high estimate.

Takashi Murakami, born 1 February 1963 in Tokyo, is a prolific contemporary Japanese artist who works in both fine arts media, such as painting, as well as digital and commercial media. He attempts to blur the boundaries between high and low art. He appropriates popular themes from mass media and pop culture, then turns them into thirty-foot sculptures, "Superflat" paintings, or marketable commercial goods such as figurines or phone caddies (Wikipedia).
