Principal Outed Gay Students at School

on 04-30-2008 16:35

The principal of Hollis F. Price Middle College High School in Memphis, TN, is being accused of outing a young gay couple at the school by putting their names on a list for everybody to see.Hollis F. Price logo

The American Civil Liberties Union ((ACLU) says principal Daphne Beasley in September 2007 asked her staff to give her the names of students who were couples, heterosexual and homosexual, because she wanted to keep an eye on them to cut down on public displays of affection.

Among the students on the list were two boys, Andrew and Nicholas, who had just started dating and ACLU claims Beasley violated students' constitutional rights to equal protection, freedom of expression and association, due process and privacy by outing their relationship to other students, teachers and even their parents.

"Our first reaction was wow, this is unbelievable that a principal has gone this far," says ACLU attorney Christine Sun.   "The constitution protects all of us from the government intruding in our private lives when there isn't a reason to do that. This was morally and legally wrong."

One of the young men, Nicholas, an 11th grader who just made the Dean's List, spoke with Eyewitness News Everywhere.

"It was actually frightening to see a list with my name on it where not just other teachers could see but students as well," said Nicholas, an 11th grader who just made the Dean's List, to Eyewitness News Everywhere.

Nicholas says his teachers and other students treat him differently as a result of of the incident and that both he and Andrew have had to deal with verbal assaults. One of Nicholas' teachers even denied him to go on a trip to New Orleans to help rebuild homes because he would "embarrass" the school by engaging in gay affection.

"I really feel that my personal privacy was invaded," Nicholas says.  "I mean, Principal Beasley called my mother and outed me to my mother!"

1. Gay bashing by teacher
It's people like that that make life so hard for gays. She needs to be fired for invading the privacy of these two young students. Not jsut the gay couples she is hitting on here but also the boy/girl relationships. At that age there are going to be couples whether gay or straight. SHe must be one lonely old lady by having to resort to trying to break up any couples either gay or straight. Lets them all express their preferences and love for their partner. What harm were they causing by walking the halls together. She must have very few friends with her attitude. Good luck to you two.

this really pisses me off. i mean, if they're together, they're together. and not going on a trip to new orleans to help build houses for people who have lost them???? WHAT IS THAT! your not going down there to spread ur gayness. ur going there for very humane reason. and no one needs to know whos together. because honestly there are alot of people who are not together that express PDA (public display of affection) all the time. so why would it matter that you HAVE to know? exactly you dont. i wish it would of been me in this situation...things would of gone way different.

This is truly an infraction of the privacy all students have the right to have in any school. Now these two young men face threats from their fellow students, and we all know how homophobic people sporadically decide to take "matters in to their own hands" (i.e. Mark Shepherd).
I have worked and taught gay kids for years in MD, I gave them support, encouragement, counsel. What is the problem with this principal that she can not do the same? My recommendation is fire this woman, She is certainly NOT a child advocate.

Previous comment: ref to Mathew, not Mark....
Sorry about that!
Guess I was boiling at the nerve of an educator doing such a thing in her school, that I used the wrong first name!
