| Key West Gears up for Gay Spring Break |
KEY WEST, FL -- As spring breakers head to beach towns throughout Florida, the island city of Key West once again expects to be the top destination choice for younger gay men and lesbians. "In recent surveys, Key West has been recognized as the most gay-friendly destination in Florida," said Ian J. Whitney, Vice President of the Key West Business Guild. "It's very exciting to see a new generation of travelers experience our community's live-and-let-live attitude for the first time." Though Key West's Gay Spring Break became an organized event in 2007, the island has attracted gay and lesbian spring breakers for over thirty years. In 2007, event organizers learned a lot about which activities were the most popular, and changed this year's format to meet demand. "In 2007, attendees flocked to pool parties or spent the day on the water snorkeling, fishing, and jet skiing," said Whitney. "At night, they enjoyed Key West's legendary shows and nightlife. Our focus this year is to provide a fun and diverse atmosphere and let people know about different options for activities from which they can choose." Events scheduled include pool parties, tea dances, underwear parties, drag shows, and activities on the water. Key West's famous Island House will be offering free day passes for men with college ids. Gay Spring Break in Key West has no age limit and is at the height of Key West's tourist season. "Gay Spring Break is not just for college kids," said Whitney. "We are reaching out to all young gay men and women, the young at heart, and others who enjoy the types of events that we are planning, good music, palm trees, nightlife, fun people, and all of the many things that Key West has to offer." Key West was rated the second-most gay friendly travel destination in a 2007 Travel Industry Association/Harris Interactive/Witeck-Combs survey. Last update: 03-12-2008 15:24
