Park City, UT -- The Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) announced the nominees and honorees for its 19th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at a press conference held at the Queer Lounge at the Sundance Film Festival Sunday. Among the nominees: Julie Taymor's musical extravaganza Across the Universe, Eytan Fox's third GLAAD Media Award-nominated film The Bubble, ABC's new hit shows Dirty Sexy Money and Greek, NBC's hit sitcom My Name is Earl, the episodes "Boy Crazy" from Cold Case and "Do Tell" from Boston Legal, Bravo's reality hit Work Out, 60 Minutes, Entertainment Weekly, three episodes of The Oprah Winfrey Show, and Spanish-language nominees Amar Sin Limites, Don Francisco Presenta, Al Rojo Vivo, and Al Dia Texas [Dallas]. "This year's extraordinary nominees exemplify the important strides we have made as a community toward creating a truly inclusive society," said GLAAD President Neil G. Giuliano. "GLAAD's persistent, effective efforts to educate media professionals continue to yield a growing body of stories about lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people that are more compelling, more honest, and more real than ever before. We are proud to recognize all of this year's GLAAD Media Awards nominees." The GLAAD Media Awards ceremonies will be held in New York on March 17, 2008 at the Marriott Marquis; in South Florida at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino on April 12; in Los Angeles on April 26 at the Kodak Theatre; and in San Francisco on May 10 at the San Francisco Marriott. GLAAD will provide details about upcoming broadcast dates in the near future. GLAAD also announced that it will recognize Special Honorees Brian Graden at the New York ceremony, Janet Jackson, Rufus Wainwright and Herb Ritts in Los Angeles, Ilene Chaiken and David Mixner in San Francisco, and Wilson Cruz in South Florida. Additional Special Honorees for New York, San Francisco and South Florida will be named at a later date. "This year's honorees have used the power of their words, their music, and their art to advocate on behalf of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community," Giuliano said. "They are changing hearts and minds, and opening people's eyes to the common, human experiences we share, and it is our privilege to honor them." In addition to 117 nominees in 25 English-language categories, and 55 Spanish-language nominees in 15 categories, GLAAD also announced that it would present Special Recognition awards to the cable network BET J in New York, the magazine The Intelligence Report in South Florida, and the groundbreaking theater troupe, Theater Rhinoceros, in San Francisco. In the competitive categories, broadcast networks and cable networks each snagged 22 nominations.
