American Airlines Introduces Gay Ads

on 01-10-2008 14:38

American Airlines has committed to its first major multimedia ad campaign with new print ads in The Advocate and online which look like vintage, 50s-era illustrated posters, but with the twist of two carefree men stepping off the plane together.American Airlines' gay ad campaign

The airline has had a major presence in the GLBT marketplace over the years but has mainly concentrated on sponsorships, Commercial Closet reports.

The tagline of the new campaign is "Fly forward" and was created by American's longtime ad agency, TM Advertising, of Dallas, and Washington, D.C.-based gay marketing firm Witeck-Combs Communications.

"There's a sameness to travel ads, the same faces and couples in stock photography, we thought we'd like to try something more imaginative," explains American Airlines spokesman Tim Kincaid. The illustrations intend to capture a "wanderlust and to show people traveling with someone they care about. It allowed us to invent our own space and time, and subtly remind people that we've been here a long time," meaning same-sex couples.

A version featuring two women is due early in 2008, an important addition the airline says. "The market is not all white males," Kincaid says, "Exclude women from 'LGBT' at your own peril!"

It's about time. Gay men and gay couples have much more disposable income than the average household to spend on travel to glamorus, and sometimes undiscoverd places.
Gay is cutting edge in fashion and places to travel to. American Airlines woke up.

2. AA Should Make Up Their Mind
Isn't it American Airlines that one year ago threatened a gay couple to have them arrested and bring the flight down prior to the destination because they were embracing on the plane and a "straight" complained asking the flight attendant to have the couple stop the public displays of affection?

4. Very Interesting
I work for a company that serves as a conduit between retailers and consumers, and I've been following targeted marketing issues on [the Internet]. We run several fundraising programs for organizations, and recently, an organization decided they didn't want us to help fundraise them because we have more that just 'straight' in our sexual orientation. As a company we were bewildered at such a remark. Researching more and more into this issue, I suddenly realized the challenge among marketers and the gay community. There is a fine line between being over sensitive and appropriate. Our COO, beca
