Gay Men Can't Drive, Study Says

on 01-03-2008 14:27

According to a new study by UK researchers, women and gay men are likely to be the worst drivers, performing poorly in tasks involving navigation and spatial awareness when compared to heterosexual men.Gay Car?

Psychologists at Queen Mary, University of London, who conducted the study, believe the findings mean driving in a strange environment would be more difficult for gay men and women than for straight male motorists.

Both tend to rely on local landmarks to get around, and are also slower to take in spatial information, Telegraph.co.uk reports.

The computer-based tests were carried out on 140 volunteers, and demonstrated that gay men, straight women and lesbians navigated in a similar way, sharing the same weaknesses.

Dr Rahman said: "Men are good at using distal, or geometrical cues, to decide if they're going north or south, for instance. They have a better basic sense of direction, but they can use local land marks as well.

"Driving in a novel environment which is poor in cues is where these differences are likely to show up most.

"Women are going to take a lot longer to reach their destination, making more errors, taking wrong turns etc. They need more rich local landmarks."

Dr Rahman added that a similar performance between gay and straight men in the radial arms test showed that the divisions between sexual groups were not straightforward.

"Gay people appear to show a 'mosaic' of performance, parts of which are male-like and other parts of which are female-like," he said.

1. Proud to be a gay driver
This it a bunch of crap. I am a gay maile and have been driving for over 40 years with a very good record. Some people just can't drive. It has nothing to do with ones orientation, gender or race as some my claim. Maybe its just the people in the UK and not everywhre. There are good and bad drivers everywhere. The key is to watch out for the other person as well as your own driving. Any posts on good safe gay drivers out there anyone? There are many of us I am sure.

4. Irate: this is RIDICULOUS!
I don't know why people can't leave this issue alone; trying to figure out what genders or orientations are better at what. Being gay can't mean anything, being a woman doesn't mean anything and I'm sure my mother could use a few choice words to explain that. It's as simple as this, I'm 18 and gay and can drive better than most straight men in their pick-ups and what-not. And I was able to get to Orlando, FL with no problems, not getting lost and got back just fine. It's simple, race, age, sex, and certainly not sexual orientation determines what kind of driver you are, it's the INDIVIDUAL!
