Ab Fab's Saunders to Play 'Doctor Who'

on 12-28-2007 23:57

As Edina on the queer-centric Brit-com Absolutely Fabulous, comedian Jennifer Saunders wore an almost mind-bending array of unusual outfits.Jennifer Saunders © Solarpix / PR Photos

But her least expected costume is just one or two fittings away as she prepares to step into the role - if only for a one-off episode - of the perennially popular UK sci-fi series Doctor Who.

Currently a big hit both across the Atlantic and on BBC America, resurrected for modern audiences by Queer as Folk creator Russell Davies, the show about the time-traveling doctor currently stars David Tennant, who may be leaving after this season.

It will be the first time a woman has played the Doctor, and, with Saunders' built-in queer fan base, may just open up a whole new audience to the beloved series' odd pleasures.

1. Completely Wrong
This was reported on the 20th of December (8 days ago) and categorically denied by Russell T Davies the next day. So not only are you late, you're also wrong. Furthermore David Tennant is going to be in Doctor Who until at least Christmas 2009 - whether he is in the 2010 series is still to be announced. Therefore, nobody except Tennant will be playing the Doctor in the 3 specials scheduled for 2009.

2. DAVID TENNANT REMAINS AS DOCTOR WHO
In addtion to Matthew's comments on this article, I have two more points to add:

1. This is NOT the first time a Woman has played Doctor Who. Last year, Jennifer's Ab-Fab co-star Joanna Lumley played the Doctor on BBC1 Children-in-need:

2.David Tennant has stated on Graham Norton's BBC Show, When asked by Graham, on the show), that he has no plans to leave Doctor Who because he is ''having fun'' and plans to continue as The Doctor for (a) as long as he is having fun, and (b) For as long as Russell and Julie want him: NB: The Julie referred to is Julie Gardener, Head of BBC Wales.

4. Sad, but likely...
The way the BBC's mindset is these days, the next Doctor is more likely to be black or Indian. And chosen by the voting public in a programme presented by Graham Norton... Who's Who? !
(I'm writing this tongue-in-cheek, but I'm terrified by the thought there's a very good chance this might actually happen.)
