Hi,
I'm not from Italy but from The Netherlands. I've been to Rome once.
I guess you like to go to the cities (most people from the States like to visit old cities. Ther is enough nature in your own country....)
Then you have to go to Rome (Roma) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rome in the middle of Italy. Also nice cities are Venice (Venezia) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venice in the North, Florence (Firenze) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Florence in between both other cities.
Be prepared to meet a lot of Italian people who don't speak any other language than Italian.
(Take a travelers dictionary with you)
In Italy most people are Roman Catholic (In Rome the city/country of the Vatican is located). They are not especially gay friendly and can be homophobic. If you behave normally, like at home (?), then everything should be fine.
Before you go explore the cities, you need to ask where to go and where to stay away (crime rate in Italy is high), but that's something you should do in NY, SF of any other city in the US (I guess).
