No one needs to get married.
The fact is though, that prior to the invention of 'homosexuality' in the nineteenth century, and long since, gay men and women have married other women and men (sometimes heterosexual and sometimes not) and produced families and lived just as happily or miserably as other married couples. Because these gay married people were indistinguishable from straight married people they were offered the full protection of the law and the other civil benefits conferred upon married couples in a predominantly heterosexual patriarchal society; they conformed and they were not discriminated against.
When gay people seek to maintain their integrity by living lives and making choices that are coherent with their fundamental desires and yet conflict with societal expectations it presents a challenge to the orthodoxy. The challenge at this moment is to justify why large sectors of our communities should be deprived of basic civil rights that are accorded to other groupings within the community.
Marriage is not easy. Many fail to possess or to acquire the ability to compromise that is required. Or their egocentricity prevents them placing the health of the relationship ahead of what they perceive as their own best interests. Since the need to be a member of a group is a such a strong human motivation (the negative aspect of which gay people are perforce aware), the public approval and support offered by a marriage ceremony, particularly for gay people, can contribute greatly to the likelihood of a marriage union enduring.

IF laws supported gay marriage and couples were allowed the same priviliges of sharing
property, taxes, and death benefits, it would make sense. Other than that, I see no advantage "the piece of paper" or the ceremony and the hoopla, in some cases.
Men are by nature, more promiscuous with any sex, and I think it would do a disservice to those gays and lesbians who would be really monogamous and caring for a long time. It would also do a lot of damage to those fighting for legal rights and make the hateful people who resent gays strengthen their negative opinions, even if they are as culpable as gays are in their infidelities. Gays have not religion to hide behind.
