"Goodbye Gay Ghetto: we’re everywhere in the city"
If anything, in City of Toronto, gays and lesbians can live in a number of neighborhoods safely and securely. times have changed, and we don’t need the ghetto anymore. The rapid growth of urban gays is powered by creative people, who prefer places that are diverse, tolerant and open to new ideas.
It's official: the west end is Toronto's new queer Mecca. Though this proclamation -- currently being made with great vim and vigor in straight and gay media alike -- seems to amuse or annoy gay businesses and residents in the gay ghetto in downtown Toronto. There will always be dissenters who say this new queer village is the product of someones, imagination and doesn't exist. Less than 30 years ago Toronto's gay village didn't exist. We feel if you're going to get in the ring and try to take the belt, you have to prepare to get hit.

We've lived in the West end for 4 years now (Gladstone Ave), and I have to say, it's definately the new hot spot for queers.
There's not a block to be walked without seeing a handful of hotties, that is of course if you're into the 20 somethings with their shirts off......
Try little Italy, little Portugal, and of course.....Queen West.

Ok, so yay-there's a new queerville in Toronto. That doesn't mean jack S--- to most gays. Can you get laid there? If so give us the places. Is there a bath house or is it just a bar scene for real life encounters. Yeah everyone here can tout that it took a long time and blah blah boring stuff. Lets look at this in reality of Today-all gay men wanna know is how lucky they can get in a new gay area. So tell the world what's so great about this new gay area of Toronto? Wouldn't the old gay ghetto do just fine for the gay visitors who are looking for the standard gay fare? And before someone on here whines that there is more to gay life than that just be reminded that the only fun in being gay is cruising for the vast majority. I'm tired of gays denying the truth behind our stereotype. Stereotypes exist because there is some truth to support the common belief in the stereotype. Why should we try and say there's more to it than that when really there isn't. Gay life is really simple-some are monogamous and most aren't. Most are out to get a little tipsy and have a good time. That's what makes gay town's gay towns. It's not a collection of male couples who stay home all the time. I'm tired of everyone having to seem like they have to be politically correct all the time or defend gay life. It is what it is and Logo TV channel has it right-celebrate the absurd parts of being gay even if that means enjoy being promiscuous. I choose not to have gay friends because of what downers most of them are. I'm allergic to drama and flamingness-but that's my problem.

Queen West has been a region for great mix of people - labelling it a new Queer Village is just as silly as proclaiming a village heterosexual town. Haven't we grown enough that Gay's should realize that they are accepted in all forms of society. The huddling in groups like we need protection is stupid - stand up and be a proud gay.

I think that Queen West is great. Lots of diversity, places to go, overall very positive and tolerant environment. However, i find that finding that "special" someone is little more difficult. Everyone seems to be on this artsy, pompous cloud. Am I wrong? I've been living here for about 2 yrs and with no avail. So I resorted to joining this gay dating service...Entre Nous. Its great considering I can get consistent dates with different people or more so people I find on the same level as I am. But I still long for a more local interaction.
My point here really is, does anyone have suggestions to where I might meet someone?

Toronto is on the list of growing international cities that claim more than one "gay village". As most visitors believe, the Church Street Village (centred around Church and Wellesley streets) is Toronto's gay hub. However, the west end of the city has gradually carved out a place on the map, known locally as the "Queer West Village," or QWV.

Apparently, even the educated in Toronto are still prone to homophobia and sexual misconceptions around dominance and submission issues.

Hi all,
Hi there!
My name is Rachael and I'm a Ph.D. student at the University of Toronto in the Department of Sociology. I am currently conducting a study on queer experiences within the Queen West neighbourhood. Most research on queer studies in Toronto has been focused on the Church Street Village, and Queen West has largely been overlooked as a queer community. My goal is to address this shortcoming through this research project. I am looking for interview subjects, anyone who identifies as LGBTQ, who identifies with the Queen West community. You don't have to live in the Queen West or surrounding area, you just have to identify with the Queen West community. Interviews will be casual conversations, lasting between 55 and 80 minutes. I am happy to meet you at the location of your choice, and coffee will definitely be my treat.
For more information or to schedule an interview, please contact me either by phone at (647)261-9467 or by email rachael.carson@utoronto.ca
Thank you so much and hope to hear from you soon!
Best,
Rachael

Rachel has give up her pursuit, as she knows a more professional team from Brock University is doing 3 year $65,000 research study of the Queer West Village, researchers working in the area betwwen 2008 and 2011, when the study will be released.. Titled Leaving the gaybourhood: Queer politics in Toronto” (2008-2011).
The research considers the social, political and economic implications of the formation of a self-stylized ‘queer’ district that positions itself as an alternative community location for those looking beyond Toronto’s so-called traditional LGBT village at Church and Wellesley Streets. The research explores not only the spatial formation and organization of ‘queer’ identities, practices and ways of being but positions these within the larger questions of urban planning and politics; urban cosmopolitanism; sexual citizenship and tourism; and identity politics and difference.
