I live in the Deep South, you know, Bible Belt, I'm African-American, I'm a teenager, and I still managed to come out to my friends and family. I think that if you are gay, you should at least tell your friends, because life was really hard for me after I came out, until I told my friends. None of my friends really care, which makes it easier to deal with my "family". As far as I'm concerned, coming out helps identify who your real friends and family are.
