(Sorry if this post is outdated - I didn''t see the date and couldn't seem to attach my comment to the post).

This is for the Med Student who wants to be a singer:

(Sorry if this post is outdated and misplaced- I didn''t see the date and couldn't seem to attach my comment to the post, but I figured it's worth the risk).

While I'm not gay (I happened to come upon this board through an unrelated google search) I can relate to your situation. I'm 27 years old with no formal musical training and no family history in music to guide me. This year, after wandering through many fields and beating myself up for my 'silly,' 'childish,' 'impractical' dreams to be a singer/songwriter I realized there was no suppressing this urge and what was really holding me back was a lack of confidence and fears of commitment and the judgements of others.

The fact that you maintain this drive while having achieved so much towards a stable, respected, potentially lucrutive profession says something; plus you said yourself its not a desire for money and fame.

If this is what makes you happy go for it, explore it, takes steps with what ever free time you have. It takes time and commitment to develop such skills, but you'll find the proccess endlessly fullfilling if it is the one for you.

Singing is a skill that can be developed through study and practice. The books store has several books that help you determine where your at, teach you step-by-step the basics and come with a CD of vocal training exercises. Go find some dive bar with Tuesday night karaoke to hone your skills. Find a church where the congregation sings hymns. Take a songwriting workshop.

And if people still laugh? To hell with them -- you'll be too busy following your dream to notice!

Good luck!
