There are a few natural remedies if you prefer a more homeopathic
approach. If you are into a more natural approach to healing your cold
sores, you may try the amino acid, L-lysine, which comes in capsule form
and cream, peppermint oil, lemon balm and vitamin C. Remember that
ingesting too much vitamin C may cause diarrhea. Be sure to check with
your healthcare provider before starting any of these remedies.
Immunocompromised
Individuals who are immunocompromised, such as with HIV or cancer, may
have frequent herpes outbreaks. These people might benefit from chronic
suppression therapy to cut down on the number of attacks. There is a
danger, however, that chronic medications will lead to the development
of a resistant herpes infection.
Seeking medical advice
Cold sores generally resolve without treatment. However, if you
experience a cold sore that does not heal within a couple of weeks,
frequent cold sores or irritation in your eyes, make an appointment to
see your healthcare provider.
Things to remember
· It is important to wash your hands after you touch a cold sore. This
will help to prevent the spread of the infection.
· Too much exposure to the sun, cold, flu, stress and menstruation can
trigger a cold sore. A cold, stress and not getting enough sleep can
trigger a cold sore. You might also learn what triggers an outbreak in
your own body.
· Sometimes applying ice or warm compresses to the affected area will
help to ease the pain.
· Be sure to apply sun block to your lips and face before prolonged
exposure to the sun and wind.
· Stay clear of rubbing your eyes as the herpes virus can cause
blindness.
· Never squeeze or pick the blisters.
Although you cannot rid your body or prevent cold sores from occurring
once you have the virus, you can take steps to limit the duration of an
occurrence. If you are unsure if you have a cold sore or any questions
about it, you should see your medical provider.
