Gay Friendly in the Mediterranean

Even though gay friendliness may be hard to find in the Mediterranean countries, this tiny island is definitely an exception. You will love the contrast between the typical Greek small town charm and the cruisy nude beaches, which will make you really appreciate all those hours you spent in the gym during winter.

The easiest way to get to Mykonos is with boat or hydrofoil from the port of Pireaus, about an hour away from the Athens airport. Unless you are the kind of guy that never can have enough people around you, you would probably like to prepare your trip for early summer or in the fall. July and August is usually very crowded and it can be hard to find a decent place to stay unless you have ordered your trip a long time in advance. Don't bother trying to find a gay hotel. All the hotels are gay friendly and would actually have a hard time surviving if they were not. 

Most of the nightlife is concentrated downtown close to the port and the hotels are usually more expensive here than on the rest of the island. Taxis are quite cheap and buses run late so you might want to consider staying at a hotel close to the gay beaches, Elia and Super Paradise, instead. After all, that's where the boys are all day long!

If you prefer staying in the port area, Philippi's is one of the better hotels. It's located close to many of the bars and discos, and it's also close to the cruising area around Panagia Paraportiani. This charming little church is a must-see and the area around it is considerably more crowded at night than during the day. 

Pierro's is a very popular bar/disco that usually is crowded all night long. Here you will have the best chance of finding that hot guy you spotted on the beach earlier in the day! Other nice places to go are Montparnasse and Icarus.

Remember, even in this seemingly gay paradise you should use common sense. There has been reported several incidents of gay bashing on the island and even though they are rare, you should always take your precautions.
