Male Student Elected Homecoming Queen
University City, MO -- Aaron Zaggy, a male
student at University City High School, wanted to surprise his
girlfriend so he entered the schools Homecoming Queen contest -- and
won.
Zaggy, an A-student and athlete, entered the contest as a prank. "It's
just for fun," Zaggy said. "I didn't expect to win."
The Board of Education of the School District of University City first
learned of Aaron's plans to seek the title two weeks ago. The Board
discussed the matter and decided to allow him to enter the contest. The
Board considered it a harmless student prank.
Aaron's parents were also fully aware of his actions. Reportedly, he had
the support of his fellow classmates. The school also elected a
Homecoming King but it's unlikely that there will be a slow dance
between the King and Queen.
The school body voted for Zaggy, but he also upset some students who
consider the homecoming contest no laughing matter.
Brittany McNairy, 18, who also ran for homecoming queen feels robbed of
her chance,
St. Louis Post reports.
"I was mad. I don't think he should have run. A lot of senior girls were
mad," she said. "The queen should be a girl, and king should be a dude."
In a statement Friday, the School District of University City defended
their decision to let Zaggy run for Homecoming Queen:
"The School District of University City provides a diverse learning
environment for its students. The School District historically has
encouraged its students to participate actively in school activities and
to express their opinions on issues that matter to them. Though Aarons
win is unusual, he apparently had the support of his fellow classmates.
"Recently, many high schools throughout the country, including within
the St. Louis area, have attracted publicity as a result of senior
pranks that resulted in property damage, hurt feelings, disruption of
the educational environment, disciplinary action, and criminal charges.
In fact, a popular teen television network airs a show that features and
glamorizes such harmful pranks.
"The election of Aaron as 2007 Homecoming Queen at University City High
School is obviously unusual. However, it demonstrates that the students
at University City High School have the judgment not to engage in senior
pranks that are harmful to their high school community." |
