The Tonys: The Winners Are...
NEW YORK CITY, NY -- There were few big
shockers among the winners of the 2007 Tony Awards Sunday. One minor
surprise was recently out of the closet actor David Hyde Pierce besting
favorite Raul Esparza for the leading actor in a musical category.
Pierce
thanked his longtime partner, Brian Hargrove, during his acceptance
speech, "[Thanks to] my partner Brian, cause it's 24 years of listening
to your damn notes. That's why I'm up here tonight."
"Spring Awakening," a musical about teenage sexual anxiety, with a score
by Duncan Sheik and Steven Sater, was named best musical, taking home
eight awards, and the trilogy "The Coast of Utopia," Tom Stoppard's
examination of 19th century Russian intellectuals, took best play
honors, winning seven prizes.
Together, "Spring Awakening" and "The Coast of Utopia" received 15 of
the 25 Tonys handed out during the ceremony at Radio City Music Hall.
