George Michael Had Drugs In His System
LONDON, UK -- British pop star George
Michael had several drugs in his system when he was arrested last
October, Prosecutor Andrew Torrington told Brent Magistrates' Court in
London Wednesday. Police found Michael slumped over the wheel of his car
and the singer has pleaded guilty to driving while unfit.
Blood tests revealed the 43-year-old singer had taken prescription
antidepressants and showed traces of gamma-hydroxybutyrate, or GHB, a
drug that leaves users groggy and disoriented.
There was also marijuana in his system, prosecutor Andrew Torrington
told the court.
Michael's lawyer Michael Grieve argued that prescription sleeping pills
were most likely explanation for his condition.
George Michael, whose real name is George Panayiotou, said in a TV
interview earlier this month that he is addicted to prescription drugs
and believes the world would be a better place if more people smoked
marijuana.
District Judge Katherine Marshall said she was not concerned about the
drugs involved, but more about the condition Michael was in when he was
found in his car.
In an earlier court appearance, Michael told the judge he was prepared
to accept the consequences of his actions.
"I really have been very distressed by this whole thing. I am perfectly
aware that I did something very wrong and got into my car when I was
unfit to drive," Michael said.
Judge Marshall is scheduled to pronounce a sentence for the former WHAM!
singer on June 8, the day before he is scheduled to open up the new and
improved Wembley Stadium.
