George Michael: Guilty as Charged
British pop star George Michael pleaded
guilty Tuesday to a charge of driving while unfit through drugs. The
43-year-old singer said in Brent Magistrates' Court that he was guilty
due to "tiredness and prescribed drugs."
Cops arrested Michael, who's real name is George Panayiotou, when
motorists complained that a Mercedes-Benz was blocking traffic in North
London and then found the singer passed out.
Michael will be sentenced May 30, after more drug tests are
administered. A charge of being in charge of a vehicle while unfit
through drugs was dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service.
"I am perfectly aware that I did something very wrong and got into my
car when I was unfit to drive," Michael told the court. "I was not in my
normal physical state and I'm perfectly prepared to accept the correct
punishment for that and I would have accepted it a long time ago."
"It was fairly predictable considering how much work I had done that
week," he said.
At the time, Michael said, he was unaware that he could accept a
punishment without admitting guilt or going to court. Michaels was
worried that the set court date would interfere with his opening concert
of the new Wembley stadium.
George Michael worked hard to get the honor of opening the rebuilt
stadium and in an interview with VH1's Inside Track he said he pestered
Wembley bosses to make sure he got the gig, "I started making enquiries
last year and I told the people building Wembley 'I don't care when it
happens but I want to open it.'"
George added: "I'm not afraid this time just excited. I can only imagine
something the size of Wembley. I've spent the last two years getting
ready (for this tour).
"I was shocked at how well my voice has survived after all these years
and I haven't had to stop smoking the Weed!"
