Disney Opens for Gay Fairy Tale Weddings
LOS ANGELES, CA -- The Walt Disney Co. has
decided to change its policy in order to allow same-sex couples to
participate in their Fairy Tale Wedding program which the company runs
at its resorts and cruise line, a Disney spokesman said Thursday.
Disney previously barred gay couples from purchasing its Fairy Tale
Wedding package and holding their event at special Disneyland and Walt
Disney World ares that are set aside for weddings.
"We are updating our Fairy Tale Wedding guidelines to include commitment
ceremonies," Disney Parks and Resorts spokesman Donn Walker said. "This
is consistent with our policy of creating a welcoming, respectful and
inclusive environment for all of our guests."
According to Reuters, Disney's Fairy Tale Wedding packages cost upwards
from $8,000 and includes everything from a wedding planner to attendance
by Mickey and Minnie Mouse characters dressed in formal attire.
Religious fundamentalists, including the Southern Baptist Convention,
have been critisizing Disney for "promoting the Gay Agenda," by giving
health benefits to same-sex partners of employees, and by allowing "Gay
Day" celebrations at its theme parks.
"We are not in the business of making judgments about the lifestyle of
our guests. We are in the hospitality business and our parks and resorts
are open to everyone," Walker said.
