Mark Foley Remains Under Investigation
WEST PALM BEACH, FL -- Former U.S. Rep. Mark
Foley remains under criminal investigation for sexually explicit
Internet communications with underage boys but has not yet been charged,
authorities said Wednesday.
FBI spokesperson Debra Weierman said that "I can't really give any more
detail other than to say we're still in the preliminary investigative
stance and we are working with state authorities."
Foley
resigned last fall after alleged indecent communication with male
teenage pages and he then checked into a rehab facility in Arizona for
treatment of alcoholism and other behavioral problems.
Through his attorney, Foley admitted being gay, and also that he had
been molested by a priest when he was a teenage altar boy. He maintains
that he never have had sex with minors.
Federal law generally requires a person to meet or attempt to meet a
minor for sex for it to be a crime, but under Florida state law it is a
crime just to have attempted to seduce a minor.
"It's definitely still an active investigation," Florida Department of
Law Enforcement spokeswoman Kristen Perezluha said Wednesday.
