LONDON, UK -- 23 year-old British pop
sensation Mika, who went straight to No 1 on the UK album charts this
week, is keeping quiet about his sexual orientation.
"I never talk about anything to do with my sexuality. I just don't think
I need to. People ask me all the time. But I just don't see the point,"
Mika said to British newspaper The Sun.
"In order to survive I've kind of shut up different parts of my life,
and that's one of them, especially this early in my career.
"I don't really feel that it's necessary to know in terms of my music.
Some people make records that are defined by their sexuality but mine
really are not. It does play a lot with campness. It has a theatricality
to it. Why not? It's pop music!"
Mika, who's real name is Mica Penniman, was born in war-torn Beirut but
his family feld to the UK when he was a child. He was educated at the
exclusive Westminster School, and classically trained at the Royal
College of Music. Mika has been compared to Freddie Mercury, George
Michael, Scissor Sisters, Rufus Wainwright, and Sir Elton John.
The 23 year-old singer went straight to No 1 on the UK album charts this
week, selling 107,732 copies of his new album, and adding to an
unparalleled string of No 1's for a debut artist: No 1 single 'Grace
Kelly,' which has held the top spot now for 4 weeks running, No 1 itunes
song in the UK, No 1 on the national and regional airplay charts, No 1
video download, as well as holding down the No 1 video slot in the
country.
