Europe Split On Gay Marriage
The 25 different nations within the European
Union differ profoundly in their view on gay marriage, according to a
poll released Monday. While as many as 82 percent of Dutch citizens
support gay marriage, some eastern and southern countries show less than
20 percent support.
Overall,
44 percent of the citizens in the EU believe same-sex marriage should be
allowed throughout the union. Citizens are generally more progressive in
the northern and western parts of EU. 82 percent of the Dutch, 71
percent of Swedes, 69 percent of Danes and 62 percent of Belgians
supports the idea. In contrast, only 11 percent of Romanians, 12 percent
of Latvians and 14 percent of Cypriots agree.
The Eurobarometer poll questioned 30,000 people around the EU on a range
of issues, among them gay marriage and adoption. 32 percent of the
respondents believe homosexual couples should be allowed to adopt
children.
