Pop star Elton John has donated $20,000 to a
group trying to defeat a proposed constitutional amendment that would
ban gay marriage in Wisconsin, The Washington Blade reports.
The donation showed up in a campaign filing with the state Elections
board today. Voters will decide the issue a week from tomorrow.
John
made the donation to Fair Wisconsin October 23. It was among the gifts
that helped the group raise $2.5 million in the last reporting period.
The group has been running television advertisements noting that the
proposed amendment would also ban civil unions comparable to marriage.
Critics say that would threaten benefits for all unmarried couples — gay
and straight.
The filing cited "privacy reasons" in withholding John's address — a
filing requirement made of other donors.
The 59-year-old John is a longtime gay rights activist who lives in
Britain. He exchanged vows with his longtime partner, Canadian filmmaker
David Furnish, in a civil ceremony last year.
