A recent poll shows that Wisconsin residents are evenly
split on whether to amend the state constitution to ban gay marriage and
civil unions, or to keep the constitution unchanged.
The poll shows support and opposition to the ban is virtually equal four
months before the question appears on the November 7th ballot.
About 49 percent surveyed in the telephone poll conducted last month said
they support the amendment while 48 percent were opposed. The rest were
undecided.
The poll of 600 randomly selected adults has a margin of error of plus /
minus four percentage points.
Polls conducted earlier this year have shown a higher percentage in favor
of the proposal.
The campaign manager for a group opposing the ban says the poll shows
public opinion is beginning to shift. A leading supporter of the ban,
however, says the poll isn't a true reflection of the state's attitude on
the issue.
