Australians Support Gay Civil Unions
More Australians support the legalization of
gay civil unions than oppose it, according to a recent poll. The poll
shows that the decision to overturn the civil union law may have been less
popular than the Government might have hoped.
According to the poll, 45 per cent supported the laws allowing gay civil
unions, while 34 per cent opposed them.
Among young people, the support was even greater. 56 per cent of people
aged between 18 and 39 backs the legislation, compared with 48 per cent of
40 to 54-year-olds and 29 per cent of people aged over 55.
The Senate voted by a margin of 32 to 30 last week to uphold a Howard
Government decision to over prove the newly established Civil Unions Act.
