Rhode Island Gays May Be Allowed to Marry in
MA
PROVIDENCE, RI -- Last week the highest court in
Massachusetts decided that gay couples from Rhode Island may be allowed to
marry in Massachusetts because it is unclear if Rhode Island law prohibits
gay marriage.
The
court said that while Massachusetts law bars gay couples from states with
anti-gay marriage laws to marry in the state, Rhode Island gays may be
allowed to marry in the state.
The Rhode Island House and Senate are both considering bills to legalize
gay marriage and today Rhode Island lawmakers are hearing testimonies from
gay couples, their families and other supporters of same-sex unions.
However, the state Senate is also considering a bill that defines marriage
as a union between a man and woman.
The current bills have had hearings in previous years but never come to a
vote.
