Convicted of Infecting Partner with HIV
LONDON, UK -- A gay man that continued having
unprotected sex with his partner for seven months after he knew he was
infected with HIV, was convicted in a London court yesterday. The man did
not inform his partner that he was infected.
According
to reports, the partner got suspicious about the man's HIV status after
being told by a mutual friend of the couple that he was infected. He
confronted his partner about the issue but his partner denied being
infected and the couple continued having unprotected sex together.
The partner only discovered the truth after he tested positive for HIV. At
that point he went to police.
The defendant originally entered a not guilty plea, but changed his mind
after hearing the evidence in the case and pleaded guilty to committing
grievous bodily harm.
Lead investigator Det. Con. Elliot Toms told the Sun newspaper than, "He
is a callous, individual who has behaved in an unfaithful way. He gave us
no indication as to his intent or motivation."
Four people have previously been convicted for transmitting HIV, but this
is the first case involving a gay man.
