Ford U-turns: Back In Gay Media
When Ford Motor Company announced that they would stop
advertising their Jaguar and Land Rover brands in gay publications, the
company received harsh criticism from gay rights groups who accused the
car maker of having succumbed to pressure from conservative religious
groups. The American Family Association called for a boycott of Ford
vehicles in May due to the company's "extensive promotion of
homosexuality".
In what must be one of the fastest turn-a-rounds in corporate public
relations history, Ford wrote a letter to gay groups this week, saying it
would not only resume advertising for their Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo
brands, but also advertise their other brands in gay media.
"Ford's action is a positive outcome and win for equality and fairness,"
said Human Rights Campaign president Joe Solmonese. "Ford has sent a
powerful signal that corporate America values its gay, lesbian, bisexual
and transgender employees and consumers."
