Worlds Largest Pride Parade in Sao Paulo
SAO PAULO ()
-- Almost 2 million gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and trans people celebrated pride Sunday in the streets of Sao Paulo. In
addition to being Brazil's largest city, Sao Paulo is commonly regarded as the gay capital of the country with more than 100 bars, restaurants, hotels, and clubs targeting the gay community.
The parade, which is the ninth in a row, will be followed by a number of other gay festivities around
Brazil this summer. The city was filled by dancing people carrying pride flags and demanding equal rights for gays and lesbians.
The main theme for the parade was the fight for legalizing civil unions and gay marriages. The issue has been debated in the Brazilian congress for almost a decade but has yet to find a resolution.
Brazil is the largest catholic country in the world, and the church are a strong opponent of gay marriage."
Brazil has a long history of hate crimes against gays and lesbians. Every
