| Gay & Lesbian Art: Krayel (Kevin Raye
Larson)
Born and raised in North Dakota, Krayel sold his first painting at
fourteen and then presented his first one-man art show only three
years later. At an age when most teenagers worry about cars and
girls (or boys), Kevin was touring with the Governor's Art Exhibit
and had already garnered a myriad of state, regional and national
awards for his artistic excellence.
He left North Dakota in 1979 and moved to California. His first
solo show was nearly sold out and his work can now be found in
private collections all over the world. He has received numerous
awards including The Golden Plate Award for Excellence by The
American Academy of Achievement.
He established his own studio, Krayel Art Studio, with the limited
edition release of The Celebrity Series, which now are only
available as charitable donations from Krayel Art Studio to fund
raising events. In 1993, Kevin spearheaded The Black & White
Underwear Series, a project created to bring national attention
and financial assistance to the nonprofit art organization
dedicated to raising AIDS awareness through film, theater, music
and the fine arts. Kevin later served on their Board Of Directors
researching projects for development.
The controversial and critically acclaimed Saint Series depicts
the Catholic Saints interpreted in a sensual light, and can be
found all over the country in churches, monasteries and private
collections. Although Kevin admits he has no Catholic affiliation
himself, clergy members comprise some of his most avid collectors.
The commissioned piece, "Surrender (St. Francis of Assisi
Surrendering the Material World)" marks the ninth installment of
the collection and is considered to be one of his most
accomplished paintings. His latest works are an enthralling
symbiosis of contrasting styles that evoke the artist's continued
evolution as a compelling force in the world of art.
