Beautiful Thing
Groundbreaking Movie
By Stian Nilsen
Beautiful
Thing is a heartwarming story of two young men coming to grips with their
sexuality and the effect it has on the people in their lives.
Jamie is a reserved 16-year-old, close to his pub manager mum, and who
prefers old Hollywood musicals to sports. His friendship with neighbor
Ste, a fellow student who suffers through a troubled family life, soon
develops into a sexual and eventually a loving relationship. How the two
boys tentatively handle their nascent sexual drives is handled in both a
fresh and surprisingly upbeat fashion.
Standouts include next-door neighbor Leah, a Jamaican-British teen who is
obsessed with Mama Cass, and Jamie's mom, a tough but warmhearted single
mother trying to juggle a career, a love life and raise a son.
A wonderful comedy-drama and possibly the best gay coming-out film of the
last decade.
